Busy Isn’t Momentum
As a B2B SaaS CEO, your calendar might be brimming with meetings, team updates, and project launches. Activity, however, does not equal traction. Busy doesn’t equate to forward momentum – sometimes it’s the enemy of it – and understanding this is the first step toward scaling effectively.
Busy Teams v. Scaling Teams
There’s a great degree of pride in having a team that is buzzing around the clock. They’re building and shipping. They’ve got features going out left and right. None of them talk to customers. The problems you are solving are those you came up with on your own. That’s busy, not growing or scaling. Scaling means you are consistently acquiring more customers and keeping the ones you’ve got. Busy might support scaling but it often means running in circles. Scaling means strategically expanding your reach and influence in the market.
Stuff That Doesn’t Matter: Meetings, Launches, “Hustle”
Meetings, product launches, and a hustling culture can create an illusion of growth. These, however, are just activities if they don’t contribute to Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) growth or customer retention. Action != Accomplishment.
Momentum = Disciplined Execution
Momentum stems from disciplined execution of your GTM oriented strategy. Yes, you need a clear roadmap. Yes, you need to stick to your plan. You also need the right operating frameworks that measure what matters. This means focusing on a few KPIs – I’d tell you ARR growth and retention – and being very disciplined about measuring success against them. That will ensure team effort aligns with making your company more valuable – not being busy.
Culture Reset – From Busy to Successful
Shifting the company culture from being busy to being outcome-focused requires a reset. First define a small number of metrics that you’ll judge success on. As noted above I’d tell you that (i) getting new customers and (ii) keeping the ones you’ve got. Then require that every proposed thing you do – initiative, feature, whatever – directly maps to moving one of those two items. Complicated in practice? Sure. Easy to explain,though, and that’s the best place to start.
