As I grew my own company, Level Access, from 1M to 100M I found that there was a significant gap in practical, actionable advice for people looking to scale technology companies.   That doesn’t mean I didn’t get advice.  I got a lot. Stories, theories, drive-by strategies, fresh out of school MBAs and a management consultant or two.  In many cases, though, all that gave me was a clearer definition of the problem.   That’s not what I needed.  I needed specifics.  What the right market quota for this rep?  What’s the right ratio between reps and SDRs?  What factors go into those things?  What’s the right model for strategy?  What roles stay onshore, and which go to low-cost countries?  The details.  The mechanics of making the growth happen. The business world was brimming with surface level advice and quips but the next level down, the substance, was rare.

Many entrepreneurs who successfully scaled businesses have a similar, strong figure-it-outivness.  They constantly had to navigate challenges that no book or seminar could adequately prepare them for.   One common theme was a similar approach to solving many business problems:

  • Encounter and define the problem
  • Find people in your network have faced a similar problem
  • Talk to them about what they did, what worked, what didn’t
  • Take the observations, apply your business context, and draft up a plan
  • Validate that plan with the people you talked to, your investors and your team
  • Implement the plan

The problem is that once the problem is addressed the entrepreneur has moved on to the next thing and nobody learns from the situation.   The only way to amass enough experience to manage at increasing levels of scale was through countless conversations, trial and error, and years of mistakes.  That approach sucks.

1 to 100 is about a different path to that insight.  We do the hard work of talking to operators and entrepreneurs on a given topic and give you a final, baked out approach.   You can use that approach as is or take it as a base for your own custom approach.

Why Investments?

The reason we focus on investments as the primary method of monetization is it cuts all the bullshit out of things.   As a consultant if things go south you move on to your next gig. As an investor when things go south, I dig in.  That aligns with our operational bias – we like to be in the action. You don’t need more people at the back of the battlefield with you directing things. You need more people on the front line and in the fight. That’s how we roll. 

Build Deliberately

Our purpose in all of this is simple: to help companies scale in a way that is informed, strategic, and practical. In that we like the word “deliberate” which is about being thoughtful and actively designing an approach. In that we have a chance, together, to create a lasting impact and build thriving businesses. That’s the kind of growth I’m in it for, and it’s the kind of growth I’ll keep supporting, one company at a time.
